Retirement Planning Workshops
Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community is sponsoring Waverly Community Retirement Planning Workshops beginning January 30, 2010.  Are you on track to meet your retirement goals?  Get on the right path by attending these workshops.  Experts in various fields will address issues to assist participants for the changes which take place at retirement and explore opportunities during this change in lifestyle. Workshop sessions are as follows:
March 27 -- The Retirement Red Zone, retirement finances presented by Dave Beaty.
April 10 -- Getting Things Straight, wills, legal matters presented by Steve Egli and Steve Corson.
April 24 -- Time on your Hands?, volunteering, leisure and travel presented by Cindy Fredrick and Renee Sedlecek.
Sessions will be held on each date from 9 -11am in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Bartels. Pre-registration and $10 fee is required. Registration forms are available at www.bartelscommunity.org or by contacting Barb Bridges at bbridges@bartelscommunity.org or 319-352-4540.

The annual spring Exotic Bird & Animal Swap will be held Sunday, April 11, 2010 starting at 6:00am at the Bremer County Fairgrounds in Waverly.  Admission is $3.00 per person over 12.  For more information call John Cheever at 319-984-5052.

Waverly Newcomers Social Meetings
Newcomers is a group of women who have lived in Waverly for three years or less and meet monthly to socialize and learn what is available in and around town. The meeting routine is:  6:30pm Gather; 6:45 Guest Speaker; 7:00 Questions; 7:15 Socialize; 7:45 Adjourn to other establishment.
The meeting schedule is as follows:
April 12, 2010    Meet at Renee's home for Emily's cooking & learn about the Farmers Market.
May 10, 2010     Pot Luck - place to be determined.

Marsh Migrations

A great way to see migrating wildlife is from your kayak. Marshes are wonderful areas for waterfowl. Sweet Marsh, east of Tripoli, is one of the top birding areas in the state. Keep alert for pelicans, Sandhill cranes, ducks, and maybe even sneak up on baby goslings.

Ready to buy, but not sure which one? Come to a demo day and try them all. Our updated demo fleet has all the latest models including kayaks you don’t even need a paddle for! The new Ocean Kayak Torque and Native Kayak Ultimate Volt & Propel are battery or pedal powered and lots of fun! We also provide opportunities to try various paddle and life jacket styles so that your kayak, paddle and PFD are the best fit for you. No reservations needed.

Wartburg Community Symphony
Wartburg Community Symphony Orchestra concerts will be held in Neumann Auditorium, Wartburg Blvd. at 2nd Ave. NW in Waverly.  The schedule is as follows:  Saturday. Waverly Art Walk
Art Walk is Waverly, Iowa's annual juried fine arts and craft show.  It is held the first Saturday in May at Kohlmann Park along the Cedar River in downtown Waverly.  This year, on May 1st from 10:00am to 4:00pm, marks its fifth anniversary where artists from the tri-state area come to Kohlmann Park to sell their works of media ranging from basketry, jewelry, pottery, photography, painting and much more.  Backup location (due to inclement weather) will be the Waverly-Shell Rock High School.  For more information go to   www.waverlyartwalk.com

ACA Kayak Classes

ACA certified instructor Darrin Siefken will teach you all the basics of kayaking. The Level 1 class covers everything: kayak design, safety equipment, how to load your boat, paddle strokes and techniques and rescues.   Come prepared to get wet. This class is great for beginners or those interested in learning more about kayaking. Proper paddling techniques can make your experience on the water even more enjoyable! Level 2 class provides practice time on the river and more advanced techniques.
 
Quick Start Level 1 - $30 per person 6 to 9 pm

Beginner Backpacking Trip to Yellow River State Forest

Not sure where to begin or if you’ll even enjoy tromping through the woods? Sign up for this great introductory trip to backpacking. This is a great weekend event the whole family can enjoy. Backpack the trails at Yellow River State Forest near Waukon, Iowa. Our staff will teach you the basics of backpacking, explain the gear, show you how to properly pack your pack and you can enjoy some real “backpacking” food.

Outdoor Cooking Potluck

The perfect way to spend a summer/fall evening - sitting around a campfire and cooking in your Dutch Oven or over the open fire. Bring a dish to share with others (and copies of the recipe) - pick your favorite Dutch oven entrees, campfire meals or snacks or backpacking food. This will provide you a great chance to sample some creative outdoor cooking!
