MUSEUMS

BREMER COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM has 2 floors of exhibits in the Waverly House, a structure erected in 1864 from the native timber and brick from a local kiln.  The building served as an inn until the 1900's when it housed the CaPhenin Chemical Company.  In 1960 the Historical Society purchased the building for use as a museum.  It was the first building in Waverly to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

SCHIELD INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM, established in 1969, houses artifacts gathered by Vern and Marjorie Schield on trips to 70 countries. Also on display is the first Bantam dragline, designed and built by Schield in 1942 as the proto-type of the machine that led to the founding of the Schield Bantam Company in 1945.  The Waverly plant is now a part of the Terex Corporation.

WARTBURG ARTIST SERIES AND CONVOCATIONS
Since 1920, the Wartburg College ARTIST SERIES has offered the finest in performing arts to the residents of Northeast Iowa: Broadway musicals, symphony orchestras, dance troupes, folk dancers, and nationally recognized vocal and instrumental soloists have been a part of this series.

The Wartburg CONVOCATION SERIES features lectures by well-known speakers, usually at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays or Thursdays in Neumann Auditorium.  Convocations are open to the public without charge.  The Wartburg Players present productions in the spring and
fall. All programs are presented in the 1,200-seat Neumann Auditorium.

CONCERTS
The Wartburg Community Symphony Orchestra performs five concerts a season, September through April.  The symphony is open by audition to musicians from the Waverly area and to Wartburg College students and faculty.

The Greater Waverly Municipal Band presents outdoor concerts in the summer.  The Band rehearses during June and July and invites participation by all musicians in the area.

Wartburg College performing groups include the Wartburg Choir, Castle Singers, Concert Band, Knightliters, Jazz Band, and Chamber Orchestra.  One of the musical highlights of the year is the annual production of Christmas with Wartburg.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES
Waverly Parks and Recreation Department provides a wide variety of programs and services to area residents.  The award-winning department features youth and adult recreation programs, 18-hole golf course, outdoor pool, and a comprehensive park system.

The Waverly Rail Trail is one of Northeast Iowa’s finest and Bremer County’s only scenic bike trail. The 10-foot-wide asphalt trail was formerly the route of the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and, more recently, the Star Clipper Dinner Train.
The 7.5-mile trail begins three blocks north of the Bremer Avenue Bridge along First Street Northwest.  It crosses the river on a spectacular 500-foot former railroad bridge before passing through downtown Waverly.  It goes past the Kitchen and Bath Depot, a historic former Chicago Northwestern train station, and the Bremer County Court House and continues southeast and east out of Waverly to Highway 63 where it meets for 2-mile Jefferson City Trail and continues in to Denver. Woods along the trail provide a natural habitat for deer, turkey, fox and other woodland creatures.  Eight bridges offer beautiful vistas of the surrounding countryside. Benches on the trail provide ideal spots for a brief rest or a picnic lunch or snack.

RECREATION
The Recreation Department offers a year round comprehensive program for all ages.  Included are adult and youth sports leagues, instructional programs, special events, tournaments, public trips and other leisure time activities.  Two activity brochures are published yearly.
