WARTBURG TELEVISION TO AIR WEEKLY BUSINESS SEGMENT

Will Focus on Economy of Cedar Valley and Area Business Leaders

WAVERLY, Iowa, Jan. 23, 2012 — Wartburg College’s student-run television station, WTV8, will begin airing “Business Focus,” a weekly segment focused on Cedar Valley businesses.

“It puts the spotlight on jobs, the economy and local business leaders who are using innovation to move the Cedar Valley forward,” Travis Bockenstadt, WTV8 advisor, said of the segment.

The idea for the segment came out of the station’s desire to break the mold of being a campus-only student medium, reporter Brandon Hosch said.

By going and reporting on local business, we put out a positive name for Wartburg and show our interest in the community,” Hosch said. “Sure students now have extra stories to report on, but now the community is more involved and gives them more of a reason to watch our program.”

The greatest benefit of the spotlight will be for area business owners, Hosch said. It is a chance for them to get “free promotion” by telling their customers, neighbors and friends to watch the spotlight on their business.

While more details of the segment are still in the works, Hosch said the first airing of the segment will most likely showcase The Wild Carrot and ASJ Farm Toys, two relatively new businesses in Waverly.

The segment will air as part of WTV8’s news  broadcast, which can be seen on Monday nights at 8 p.m.

WAVERLY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION RELEASES GOALS

Expansion of Industrial Park, Affordable Housing, and Attracting Workers, Top Priorities

WAVERLY, Iowa, Jan. 17, 2012 — The Waverly Area Economic Development Commission set forth its goals and challenges for the future at the Waverly City Council meeting on January 16.

Outgoing commission chairperson Patsy Reed said the commission focuses on all aspects of business in Waverly, both current and prospective businesses.

“It is the number one goal of the Economic Development Commission to always retain the businesses that are here, and to also focus on development of new businesses that are looking to come to this community,” Reed said.

The commission would do this by keeping tax incentives and policies current, looking at the expansion of the industrial park, working on an affordable housing initiative and coming up with a plan for riverfront development.

As GMT Corporation and Terex Cranes, two of Waverly’s largest employers, are set to add more jobs, the commission will explore possibilities for partnerships with developers to create affordable housing for new employees, Reed said.

The goals of the commission are all in an effort to make Waverly more enticing to potential residents that can have a positive impact on the community.

“People are the key to any city,” Reed said. “Cities that attract creative people are the ones that will be the most successful economically in the future.”
